Replace thirsty lawn with drought-tolerant plantings, rock, and drip irrigation that look sharp through a Southern Oregon summer on a fraction of the water.

Front yard lawn-to-xeriscape conversion with rock borders in Medford, Oregon

Why Rogue Valley homeowners are ditching the lawn

Medford averages around 18 inches of rain a year, almost none of it between June and September. Keeping a lawn green through that means watering several times a week, mowing every weekend, and a water bill that climbs every summer. Xeriscaping is the alternative: a designed landscape of drought-tolerant plants, decorative rock and mulch, and targeted drip irrigation that uses a fraction of the water and needs a fraction of the work.

Done well, it does not look like a gravel lot. Our conversions use curved beds, layered plant heights, boulders, and rock borders so the yard reads as intentional and finished.

What a More Life xeriscape includes

  • Lawn removal and disposal, including the old sprinkler heads
  • Grading and soil prep for drainage
  • Weed barrier and decorative rock, gravel, or bark in the right areas
  • Drought-tolerant and native plantings sized to mature without crowding
  • Drip irrigation on a timer so new plants establish, then taper off
  • Metal edging, stone borders, and boulder accents
  • Optional DG paths, dry creek beds, and seating areas

Plants that thrive in Medford heat

We build water-wise beds around proven performers for zone 8: lavender, Russian sage, yarrow, salvia, rosemary, manzanita, ceanothus, ornamental grasses like blue oat grass and feather reed grass, and accent trees such as crape myrtle and desert willow. Natives like Oregon grape and kinnikinnick fill in shade. Everything gets drip so it establishes the first year, after which most of it needs little supplemental water.

Water-wise does not mean plant-free

The yards people regret are the ones that are all rock. We keep plant coverage high so the landscape stays cool, soft, and seasonal, with rock used for paths, borders, and accents rather than as the whole picture. The result is a front yard neighbors in Ashland and Talent stop to ask about.

“We contacted Jose about replacing our front lawn with waterwise landscaping, and his team provided outstanding results. Jose and his team exceeded all of our expectations, while being a joy to be around.”

“It was just a small mountain of hard soil and wasn’t safe to walk on and was quite the eye sore. I got ‘more life’ in my back yard and it’s my new peaceful spot. I’m pleased with their attention to detail, vision and quality work!”

FAQ

Xeriscape & Water-Wise Questions

Question 1How much water does xeriscaping save?

A converted front yard commonly cuts outdoor water use by half or more compared with lawn, and established drought-tolerant plants may need watering only occasionally in peak summer. Drip irrigation delivers water to roots instead of spraying it into the air.

Question 2Does a xeriscape yard look like a gravel lot?

Not the way we build it. We use a high ratio of plants to rock, curved beds, varied heights, and boulder or stone accents so the yard looks designed and green, just with plants that handle heat.

Question 3Can you convert only part of my lawn?

Yes. Many Medford homeowners keep a small lawn in back for kids or pets and convert the front and side yards. We can also shrink a lawn and replace the edges with water-wise beds.

Question 4Is there a rebate for replacing lawn in Medford?

Local water providers sometimes offer conservation incentives, and programs change. Check with the Medford Water Commission or your local district for current offers; we can provide the project details they typically ask for.
